Working Women Community Centre

Working Women Community Centre (WWCC) is a non-profit organization that provides immigrant women and their families with opportunities to improve the quality of their lives through self-development and community action. Through the Victoria Village Action for Neighbourhood Change project, WWCC obtained funding from the City of Toronto's Graffiti Transformation Program to carry out a mural project at the East Toronto Chinese Baptist Church in the Victoria Village area. A team of five youth artists - Chloe, Emmanuel, Yusuf, Giddeon, and Tasheika, were employed to help create the mural. The lead artist, Michael Reyes and Community Animator Bryan Peart worked with the team over the summer.

During July and August of 2011 the team worked towards engaging the surrounding community of Victoria Village through surveys to gather opinions about the mural, as well as taking into account the needs of the ETCBC and Project Urban Canvas. The end result illustrates Article 15, as well as serving the community with a mural that reflects the surrounding diversity.

Michael Reyes specializes in graffiti art. He has worked on various murals, and has been the lead artist on the annual Graffiti Transformation Project in Victoria Village since 2008. Through his art, to Michael, graffiti art is more than just a form of art; it is a form of self-expression.

The ETCBC is located on 22 Carnforth Road in the North end of Victoria Village. The wall that was donated for the mural is located at the back of the building in the parking lot. The purpose of the mural was to cover up previous graffiti tags as well as prevent them in the future. The mural reflects the diversity in the community and emphasizes our right to a nationality.
